Competitor Update Nr.1 (July 29th, 2007).
Welcome racers, its less than two months to the start of the Olympic Peninsula AR, and we are getting pretty excited about the racecourse shaping up. The Registration, Direction, Gear List and Waiver has been updated already.
Race Headquaters is
Camp Cushman and Camping and Start/Finish are found in the Directions Tab. Camp Cushman has RV, Tent Sites, as well as about a dozen cabins that can be rented out. Inquire with them, they will go fast. For racers (point out that you are doing the adventure race) there will be a 10% discount on RV and Tent sites, no rebate on the cabins. There are plenty of
Motels in Hoodsport as well.
Race Start Times and rough discipline distances will be announced closer to the race. Expect to be paddling on flatwater 15+ miles, some of it (a small portion) likely at night. Not that the Gear List has been updated accordingly and will likely not change anymore. Speaking of paddling, we have worked out two deals with local kayak shops for your convenience. For those wanting a higher performance boat (double necky amaruk, same boat as is regularly used by expedition races such as Primal Quest), the
Northwest Outdoor Center (
www.nwoc.com) will rent their 14 boats for 100$ per boat per weekend. However you need to pick it up, drop it off and have an according boat rack.
Kayak Hood Canal (
http://www.kayakhoodcanal.com/) has a bit more stable doubles (Feelfree St.Croix) and singles (Pungo Classic by Wilderness Systems) are 100$ for the doubles for the weekend, and 75$ for the singles. This includes transportation to and from the Start/Finish, so all you have to do for those is contact them, reserve, pay and show up. Both deals are "get them till they are gone", there are other places out there but they are probably farther away and more expensive. For the first interested 4P team, we have two amaruks to rent that will be onsite, email us (
4thDracing@gmail.com) to reserve those.
A list of registered teams will be posted in the next week or two, and the racer packages sent to you about two weeks before the race. NOTE: To make sure you receive a nice polypro race shirt we need to have your registration by September 1st. Hopefully we will have extras for everyone signing up late, but we cannot order dozens of shirts extra in all sizes, so save us and yourself the hassle and sign up as early as you can, so we will have a better idea on race needs such as volunteers, shirts, food, etc...
Looking forward to seeing you out there!
